Just 368 days after making it to Wembley in the 2022 European Championships, Germany finished third in their group and failed to qualify for the World Cup knockouts.
For the first time in their history, Germany had failed to make the knockouts in a major tournament.
Outlining a few particular reasons, Germany's failure at the 2023 Women's World Cup will be looked at in detail.
Poor Lead-Up To The Tournament
In 2023, Germany kicked off their preparations for the Women's World Cup by drawing 0-0 with Sweden in February.
This is a respectable result considering Sweden were ranked 3rd in the World Rankings.
However, they bounced back and won 1-0 versus the Netherlands in their following game reinstating their intention of being a huge favourite in the summer.
After this, a less than convincing 2-1 win versus Vietnam suggested that everything may not be smooth running come July.
Contrastingly, a poor performance against Brazil meant that Germany failed to score within 90 minutes and took a late consolation through Jule Brand to make it 2-1 for Brazil.
In the last friendly before the tournament, Germany (ranked 2nd in the FIFA World Rankings) lost 3-2 to Zambia (ranked 77th in the FIFA World Rankings).
Inability To Go Again
After reaching the heights they did in the 2022 European Championships, it can be argued that the Germany women's team just couldn't do it all again.
We have seen this with many sides in Women's football with one clear example being the USWNT team struggling in the 2023 Women's World Cup after being so dominant in the previous tournaments.
What's Next...
Germany have impressed once again since the World Cup and managed to qualify for the next round of the Nations League by topping their group.
A 0-0 draw versus Wales was enough to ensure they made it to the semi-finals of the Nations League tournament and were one step closer to securing a 2024 Paris Olympics spot.
