Vincent Kompany spoke to the media for the very first time in a press conference held by him and sporting director Max Eberl in the unveiling of the Bayern Munich coach.

In a surprise move for some, Bayern Munich's board have appointed Burnley's head coach over the last two years in Vincent Kompany as the managerial successor to Thomas Tuchel.

Vincent Kompany's Background

Vincent Kompany kickstarted his career as a coach the season after he left Manchester City in 2019, by taking on a player-manager role at his youth club Anderlecht.

During this season, he worked alongside Simon Davies and later Franky Vercauteren as a player-manager as his side finished eighth in the Belgian First Division A.

The following campaign (2020-21), he took the reigns as head coach for the first time in his career at the same club and guided Anderlecht to a respectable third place finish which saw them qualify for the Conference League qualifying rounds after the play-offs.

In his second season at Anderlecht, he stabilised the team into third once again and this time he accrued six more points (64) during the regular season and earnt the side once again another European campaign.

In the summer of 2022, he decided to switch to the then recently relegated English Championship side Burnley in a bid to try and get them back into the top flight.

During this sole season in the Championship, he managed to get Burnley promoted into the Premier League with 101 points and also earnt four seperate manager of the month awards as well as the manager of the season award for England's second tier.

However, the step up to the Premier League was tough for Vincent Kompany's Burnley despite a positive opening game against Manchester City. With one game remaining in the 2023-24 season, Burnley were relegated with only five victories throughout the campaign.

This week, on the 29th May, he was revealed as Bayern's new manager.

Vincent Kompany's first words as Bayern Munich Manager

Vincent Kompany spoke a bit about his philosophy within his first press conference as a manager when he said: "I grew up on the streets of Brussels, in the Anderlecht academy. You have to be a team, I want my players to have courage, to be aggressive."

In terms of the situation with the squad, Kompany said: "It's still too early to talk about players. I'm looking forward to working with them. I want to find out how hungry the players are. Bayern didn't become champions last year, I'm familiar with that situation too."

Lastly, Kompany spoke about his ex-Manchester City teammate (2016 to 2019) in Leroy Sané: "At Manchester City, I was more than just a captain. So maybe things won't be that different for Leroy than it was back then. He is a very talented player. My job is to get the best out of Leroy Sané - and every player. I won't make any distinctions.
