Werder Bremen captain Marco Friedl's injury is more serious than initially thought and the Austrian will be out for several weeks.
Marco Friedl sustained an injury in Tuesday's training session with Werder Bremen.
Following further tests, it was revelaed that the Werder Bremen skipper suffered syndesmosis ligament tear.
Clemenz Fritz (head of professional football at Werder Bremen) said: "While the situation with Marco still seemed fairly good yesterday afternoon, it deteriorated pretty badly overnight, and as such we did some more tests on Wednesday morning which revealed a tear in the syndesmosis ligament."
The Austrian has made eighteen appearances this season in the Bundesliga in a Werder Bremen side which currently sits in 7th.
