Jess Thorup spoke about Augsburg's 2-1 victory vs Freiburg following the game in an interview. In this, Augsburg's manager was quick to quieten down any talks of a surge up the Bundesliga table.
Augsburg won 2-1 against Freiburg on Bundesliga matchday 23 thanks to goals from Arne Engels and Felix Uduokhai in the second half.
Initially being one-nil up, Freiburg managed to lead relatively early on as Vincenzo Grifo converted a penalty in the nineteenth minute.
However, this lead was stolen in the last quarter of the game as Augsburg's Uduokhai pounced on a Noah Atubolu parry to level the score. Slightly under ten minutes later, Arne Engels converted a clever chance with a near post effort following Ermedin Demirović's pass.
After the tie, Augsburg's coach Jess Thorup said: "I am really happy with this win. I think it was a deserved win, from the first minute on we controlled the game and played well."
When asked why Augsburg always concede a penalty, Thorup said: "I don't know, but today I would say that I am happy and another comeback against a difficult opponent. These were three important points for us."
Lastly, Jess Thorup was asked about whether he was looking up the table. In his response he said: "I know the programme. Next week we play Darmstadt. It is a difficult away game."
He added: "So long as we are not safe from relegation, we must fight for every point. When we might look up the table? I don't know."
