Bayer Leverkusen played a miserable and soulless game in the Europa League final to be knocked out by Atalanta 3-0 and this ended their unbeaten run.
Bayer Leverkusen had been fifty-one games unbeaten, and apparently this had had a large influence on their fitness and they seemed a bit leggy on the pitch.
Without posing much a threat on the Atalanta goal, Xabi Alonso's weirdly composed lineup consisting of Jeremie Frimpong in a central position was ineffective.
However, the fact that Atalanta played superbly cannot be discounted as they were able to break apart Bayer Leverkusen's supposed "sturdy" defence and Ademola Lookman was the key player with his hat-trick (the first ever in the final of this competition).
Xabi Alonso's team will have to rebuild before the DFB-Pokal final against Kaiserslautern and may face a greater task than once anticipated.
