With the 2. Bundesliga heading into its third weekend of action following the winter break, here are five players to look out for during Saturday's fixtures.
St. Pauli vs SpVgg Greuther Fürth, Kick off 12:00 pm GMT:
Tim Lemperle
Currently on loan from 1. FC Köln, Tim Lemperle has been at the heart of much of the attacking output at the Greuther Fürth this season. Alongside attacking partner Branimir Hrgota, Lemperle has been a part of one of the deadliest partnerships in the 2. Bundesliga with the two having sixteen goal contributions between them. At only twenty-years-old, Lemperle still has plenty of room to improve and grow as a player. Despite this, upon return to his parent club Köln it will be expected that he has a good chance of gaining himself a starting spot in the squad.
Marcel Hartel
With eleven goals and eight assists, Marcel Hartel has set the 2. Bundesliga alight for top of the table St. Pauli. He was unfortunate in the cup as, although he scored a penalty in normal time, he missed a penalty to see St. Pauli lose in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal. Despite this, if St. Pauli get promoted this year it will be thanks to him as he has been one of the players of the season in the German second tier and looks to be destined to be playing for a Bundesliga side next season (should St. Pauli not get promoted he is said to not be renewing his contract (which expires in June), Bild reports).
Schalke vs. Eintracht Braunschweig, Kick off 12:00 pm GMT:
Kenan Karaman
Kenan Karaman has been a small glimmer of hope for Schalke 04 this season, earning two man of the awards and netting eleven goal contributions throughout the 2. Bundesliga campaign. In completing an average of 1.6 dribbles per game, Karaman has the second-highest dribble rate in the squad and proves that his technical ability can create opportunities for the rest of the squad. Lastly, he also boasts the statistic that Schalke have only lost one single game in which he has scored in this season in the league (six games total (four wins, one loss)).
1. FC Nürnberg vs. VfL Osnabrück, Kick off 12:00 pm GMT:
Can Uzun
At just eighteen-years-old, Can Uzun has been a revelation at Nürnberg this season and has attracted the interest of some of Europe's top sides (ChronicleLive). Having played only seventy-four minutes last season for Nürnberg last campaign, he has managed the step up to the senior team very well and looks to become a valuable asset for the team from Bavaria. With eight goals so far, only seven players have scored more than him. As well as this, he is also the highest-scoring under-21 in the 2. Bundesliga so far this season. His output from midfield makes him a useful asset for Nürnberg in what should be a comfortable victory against bottom side Osnabrück.
Hertha BSC vs. Hamburger SV, Kick off 19:30 pm GMT:
Robert Glatzel
Currently the top-scorer in the 2. Bundesliga, it should come as no surprise that Robert Glatzel ia going to prove a danger for Hertha Berlin on Saturday evening. With thirteen goals so far, Glatzel will hope to become the 2. Bundesliga "Torschützenkönig" following missing out last season and being second place behind Tim Kleindienst in the league top scorer race for the second consecutive season in-a-row. With sixty goals for the club, Glatzel is a fan favourite and will hope to propel the side into promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2018. Currently in fourth place, Hamburg could move within two points of St. Pauli in first if Greuther Fürth manage to win away at the Millerntor on Saturday.
