Bayer Leverkusen won against the nine men of VfL Wolfsburg in the final game of the Bundesliga's matchday 25. Bayer 04 coach Xabi Alonso gave his thoughts after the game.
Bayer Leverkusen won (for the third Bundesliga game in a row) a hard-fought against a game against a side with ten men. This week, VfL Wolfsburg caught a red card as Moritz Jenz received his second booking in the 28th minute.
Just ten minutes later, Nathan Tella bagged to put Bayer 04 one-nil up and open the scoring. This goal, however, was not of the Englishman's making as full-back Alejandro Grimaldo was to thank for setting up the strike.
Putting the nail in the coffin, Bayer then netted another and their last in the 86th minute through Florian Wirtz's volley and the game ended 2-0. This extends their unbeaten run to 35 games.
After the tie, manager Xabi Alonso said: "In the first ten, fifteen minutes we started very well with control and without any ball loss. Afterwards, it was important to score the opening goal in the first half."
He added: "It wasn't easy, maybe we could have taken some more risks. But maybe, the game became more calm. We waited for the right moment and we got the super assist from Exequiel Palacios and the goal from Florian Wirtz."
Lastly, Alonso said: "Overall, I am very happy. Today, on the left side we rotated a bit with (Alejandro) Grimaldo's position."
