Union Berlin host Freiburg at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on the final Bundesliga matchday and are looking for some late season drama to stay up in the Bundesliga.

Match Overview

Union Berlin

Union Berlin are perhaps a bit demoralised from their loss last weekend after they were 2-0 up against Köln. Three goals from the 45th minute onwards starting off with Florian Kainz's penalty at the end of the first half tipped the game on its head.

Compiling this misery, the side from Germany's capital are without manager Nenad Bjelica since he was sacked after Bochum's victory over "Die Eisernen".

Since then, Marco Grote has been at the helm as interim manager and will potentially guide his side into the Bundesliga playoffs against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Much like current relegation rivals Köln in the 2017-2018 season, Union are facing a relegation in the same season as a European campaign (not just any European competition, but the Champions League).

The goal is very clear for Union Berlin and that is that they need a draw or win to at least confirm 16th place.

Finally, ahead of the Freiburg tie, Union's interim coach Grote said: "They’re good opponents who aren’t in the top third of the table and fighting for European competition for no reason. They’ve been doing it for years."

SC Freiburg

Freiburg are currently in 8th place and have an opportunity to break into the top seven with victory over an out-of-form Union Berlin side which has been subject to a managerial merry-go-round this campaign.

Christian Streich may well end up marginally off Champions League football once again as a win against Union may leave the side from the Black Forest one point off sixth (which would become a UCL spot with a Dortmund Champions League final win).

Vincenzo Grifo never fails to impress for Freiburg and has accrued fifteen goal contributions this Bundesliga edition even though he has been less impressive than he was last season.

Ahead of his last ever game as Freiburg coach, Christian Streich said: "For Union it’s about staying in the league. They’ll do everything for that, and we’ll do everything to achieve a nice result, so it’s a meeting between two highly motivated teams."
