On Friday evening, Edin Terzić's Borussia Dortmund failed to take advantage in the race for a Champions League spot as Frank Schmidt's Heidenheim remain in mid-table.
Overview
Heidenheim opened the game having a large portion of the control of the game despite only registering 30% of the possession.
Borussia Dortmund's Salih Özcan gifted the ball to Tim Kleindienst in the fifteenth minute but Kleindienst failed to take advantage of the chance.
By the halfway point of the first-half, Heidenheim had four shots whereas Dortmund had only managed a single attempt.
In the 27th minute, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens played a ball through to Donyell Malen and Malen worked his way around the keeper to slot it in the back of the net, however the goal was ruled out by VAR due to it being offside.
The rest of the half played out much the same, Dortmund found themselves with the majority of the possession but were unable to make the final passes to create clear-cut opportunities.
Early in the second half, in the 56th minute, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens produced an ambitious overhead kick attempt which was saved by Heidenheim's Kevin Müller.]
Later in the half, substitute full-back Ramy Bensebaini went down in the box however the referee deemed it not to be a penalty.
One last chance fell for Heidenheim as Florian Pick's cross met Kevin Sessa's head at the back post however Stefan Schimmer was unable to lunge enough to reach the ball and make contact.

With five aerial duels won and six tackles, Patrick Mainka was solid in defence and ensured that Heidenheim kept out Niklas Füllkrug and Youssoufa Moukoko.
