Edin Terzić's Borussia Dortmund face off against Xabi Alonso's unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side at home on Sunday fresh off a morale boosting victory over Atlético Madrid.

Match Overview

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund reached their first Champions League semi-final since 2013 on Tuesday thanks to four goals in a home win against Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid via a second half comeback.

In this game, Marcel Sabitzer probably put together his best performance since switching from record champions Bayern to Borussia Dortmund as he scored the final goal.

Similarly, Dortmund are one of only four sides this season to take points of champions Leverkusen in the league as they drew with Alonso's side in December.

Borussia Dortmund have two top scorers in the Bundesliga with eleven goals each: Niclas Füllkrug has eleven in the league and so does Donyell Malen.

Before Sunday's match, Dortmund coach Edin Terzić said: "Leverkusen absolutely deserve to be champions. They're having an extraordinary season and breaking record after record."

Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen drew to West Ham United in the Europa League in midweek thanks to a late Jeremie Frimpong goal to level the game at 1-1 and see Alonso's side proceed to the semi-finals.

This draw meant the the side from North-Rhine Westphalia extended their record unbeaten run to 44 games in all competitons since the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

Alongside this, they are still on for the treble consisting of: the Bundesliga (which they have already won), the Europa League (they are in the semis at the moment) and the DFB-Pokal (finalists currently).

Furthermore, it has been no secret that Bayer 04 have enjoyed success through their wing-backs this campaign. In the Bundesliga alone, both Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong have accrued a total of thirty-six goal contributions which highlights their large influence.

The best free transfer since Robert Lewandowski's infamous move from Sunday's opponents to Bayern Munich, Grimaldo has been at the forefront of many talks about Simon Rolfes' incredible transfer strategy at Leverkusen.

Lastly, ahead of the tie on Sunday, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said: "Obviously the most important thing is that the title is now won. But the Bundesliga isn’t over for us yet, no. We respect the competition and every team."

Team News
