Atlético Madrid (currently fourth in La Liga) face Borussia Dortmund (joint on points with fourth in the Bundesliga) in the quarter-finals of the 23-24 Champions League.
Match Overview
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund disappointed on the anniversary weekend of the 50th year of the Signal Iduna Park when they played against Stuttgart on Saturday.
A second half Serhou Guirassy sunk this Borussia Dortmund side who were simply not clinical enough despite having seven shots on target.
This result left them back in fifth place in the Bundesliga and only level on points with RB Leipzig, with the game between the two on the cards in three weeks time.
Despite this loss, Dortmund have won four of their last five games in the Bundesliga including notable wins against Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Lastly, Borussia Dortmund have won two games against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League (most recently winning 4-0 in the first tie between the two in the 2018-19 Champions League group A).
The side from Madrid, however, have also won two games in the Champions League against Dortmund and won 2-0 in the most recent game between the two sides thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez.
Before the game on Wednesday, Ian Maatsen spoke to the Dortmund website about Diego Simeone and said: "Atletico's coach Diego Simeone is very passionate and close to his team. The players want to do their best for him, you can see that, otherwise they wouldn't be in the quarter-finals."
Atlético Madrid
Atlético Madrid have very much played second fiddle in recent years to both Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both of the giants who together make the El Classico game have finished higher than Atlético Madrid in each of the last two La Liga seasons.
In the Champions League, little success has been had since their appearance in the 2015-16 final. They have only managed one semi-final appearance (2016-17) since the infamous Madrid derby final in Europe's biggest stage just under eight years ago.
During four of the last six years in the Champions League, Atlético Madrid have failed to make it past the round of sixteen stage and have faltered at the group stages twice during this period.
Antoine Griezmann is the club's highest scorer in Champions League history Antoine Griezmann with thirty-two goals all-time.
