RB Leipzig showed no mercy in tearing apart one of the Bundesliga's biggest carnival jokes, no it's not Hennes IX, in Timo Schultz's 1. FC Köln thanks to Xavi Simons' performance.

Match Overview

Early on, the game was somewhat level with two shots for each side after just over ten minutes.

However, in the fifteenth minute, Xavi Simons netted a well-worked move from RB Leipzig to put the away side 1-0 up.

In spite of this, Köln came with a speedy response as Sargis Adamyan scored from close range following a corner to level the score.

During the 26th minute, Loïs Openda had a goal ruled out due to offside. Just under five minutes later, Benjamin Šeško managed to shot the ball right into Marvin Schwäbe's body as Effzeh's keeper made a neat stop.

Both sides went into the second half level. However, just past the hour mark, Loïs Openda put the away side one goal up with a tap in following a Xavi Simons assist.

Two goals in three minutes from Loïs Openda and Amadou Haidara in the 67th and 70th minute meant that RB Leipzig killed off the game.

The icing on the cake came when Yussuf Poulsen was able to net his traditional goal against Köln (a side he loves to score against) to make the score 5-1.

Things got worse for the Billy Goats as Steffen Tigges was not even able to get a consolation late on.

Man of the match

RB Leipzig: Xavi Simons

Xavi Simons scored and provided an assist in a vintage performance from the PSG loanee. He, despite this wonderful outing, will be disappointed with himself as he provoked the Köln supporters early on and produced a reaction.
