Kaiserslautern have announced that Friedhelm Funkel will be Dimitrios Grammozis' successor as head coach following his sacking.

Friedhelm Funkel last managed at 1. FC Köln in 2021, where he replace Markus Gisdol late into the season and secured Bundesliga safety.

The seventy-year-old is now the oldest manager in the 2. Bundesliga, this being by a significant margin.

Since managing Köln, the manager born in Neuss, Germany has been enjoying retirement. Also, Funkel himself made eighty-nine appearances as a player for Kaiserslautern.

Dimitrios Grammozis, 1. FC Kaiserslautern's previous manager, was dismissed just this morning.

Funkel has received the reputation of being a "Feuerwehrmann" (fire fighter) as he has been often employed as a last-resort short-term coach in order to ensure survival.
